“What I never told Joannie was that the FBI was looking for me. There was something in her I didn’t trust — the pills, the fog, the way she drifted in and out of herself. I was always afraid that in some stupor she’d let something slip, tell the wrong person the wrong thing. Until I landed in prison, I’m sure she had no idea who I really was or what I’d done before she met me.
And to be honest, I was enjoying the adventure. The kid whose biggest wish was that his life not be boring was getting his wish.”
